Target Audience

The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of infectious disease and other HIV-treating physicians (MDs), nurse practitioners (NPs), physician associates (PAs), and pharmacists regarding long-acting injectable (LAI) antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Program Overview

The advent of LAI ART has changed the landscape of HIV treatment. LAI cabotegravir/rilpivirine (CAB/RPV) is approved for use in patients who are virally suppressed, though recent research has been conducted on its use in patients who are not suppressed. Particular care must be taken around adherence and discontinuation of LAI ART, as there are notable differences in protocols compared with oral ART. Despite its availability, many clinics still struggle to implement protocols and develop workflows that facilitate use of LAI ART. In this interactive activity designed to help clinicians overcome specific challenges in the context of patient cases, Dr. Aadia Rana will discuss patient selection, missed doses and adherence, LAI ART discontinuation, and practicalities of LAI ART implementation in the clinic.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Identify patients eligible for treatment with a 2-drug LAI ART regimen
  • Devise clinic protocols to streamline LAI ART implementation
  • Address missed doses of LAI ART to avoid virologic failure or resistance
  • Create and implement subsequent ART regimens for patients who are discontinuing LAI ART
