Target Audience
The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of infectious disease and HIV specialist physicians, nurse practitioners (NPs), and physician assistants (PAs) who manage the care of female patients living with HIV.
Program Overview
Women with HIV face unique burdens in care, and Black women in particular face a disparate burden of HIV. The numerous considerations at initial diagnosis include patient education, contraceptives, and any planning for pregnancy. During and after pregnancy, additional challenges may arise regarding adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and retention in care. Women also face additional issues such as weight gain or earlier menopause. In this interactive activity, Dr. Sarah Rowan discusses HIV diagnosis in women, stigma, weight gain and strategies to mitigate its effects, pregnancy and ART, postpartum care and retention in HIV care, and menopause and hormone replacement therapy in women with HIV.
Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Discuss requirements and ART-regimen options for treatment initiation and re-initiation
- Implement optimal strategies to manage HIV in patients who are pregnant or recently postpartum, including monitoring, viral suppression, and retention in care
- Tailor ART regimens to mitigate weight gain and other changes to metabolism as patients age
- Review considerations for HIV care and whole patient care in women in the perimenopausal and menopausal periods
