Series Overview

Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a progressive autoimmune liver disease, can lead to liver failure if left untreated and, ultimately, the need for liver transplantation (LT). The prevalence of PBC has steadily increased in the past decade, owing primarily to advancements in diagnostic and newer therapies that have impacted prognosis. However, misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis are still common. Further, best practices for patient monitoring and escalation to second-line therapy are evolving to better align with the latest evidence and an expanding treatment armamentarium. This dynamic, multimodal, and interactive CME Circuit Training™ series titled “PBC Powerlifting—Optimizing Your Management Skills with New Treatment Tools,” will address key topics within PBC management—including the identification, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and comprehensive care of PBC patients—delivered in 3 sequential activities. The overall goal of this series is to ultimately improve clinician knowledge and evidence-based practice for the betterment of PBC outcomes.

Target Audience

The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of gastroenterology and hepatology specialist physicians, nurse practitioners (NPs), and physician associates (PAs) who are involved in managing patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), as well as a broader audience of front-line treaters who are in a position to identify patients with suspected PBC and refer them to specialist care (primary care and internal medicine physicians, NPs, PAs).

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of PBC as well as its symptom manifestations among diverse patient populations
  2. Implement appropriate assessment strategies to diagnose PBC early within the disease course
  3. Educate patients on their disease and what to expect for management, including psychosocial aspects and available treatment options
