Program Description

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Among the potential cardiovascular complications of T2DM, stroke is a particularly high risk for patients, especially given the aging population. Increasing rates of diabetes, hypertension, and obesity are also placing a larger population of younger patients at risk for stroke. Patients must understand the risk of stroke associated with T2D so they can participate in shared decision-making to reduce their risk. Expert faculty discussions in this Phone-a-Friend episode will address patient education about lifestyle modification, selection of anti-diabetic therapies, and potential effect of COVID-19 on stroke risk in patients with T2D.

Target Audience

The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of endocrinologists, neurologists, cardiologists, and primary care providers (PCPs), including nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs), who manage patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) at risk for stroke.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, participants will be better prepared to:

  • Tailor treatment regimens with GLP-1 receptor agonists to address hyperglycemia, additional cardiometabolic risks, and shared decision making with patients with T2D
