Target Audience
The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of primary care, family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatric MDs, NPs, PAs, and nurses responsible for early identification and diagnostic decision-making in patients at risk for type 1 diabetes (T1D).
Program Overview
Primary care physicians and pediatricians are well positioned to identify patients at risk of developing T1D by recognizing early signs and symptoms and testing patients or their first-degree relatives for T1D autoantibodies. If patients test positive for these autoantibodies, they can be referred to an endocrinologist for further evaluation, including assessment of eligibility for teplizumab to slow disease progression. In this interactive activity featuring both videos and transcripts, Dr. Bithika Thompson will address 10 commonly asked questions related to T1D autoantibody testing, staging, diagnosis, and next steps.
Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Incorporate autoantibody screening into practice for the early diagnosis of T1D
- Review differences in T1D and T2D presentation and screening protocols to accurately diagnose T1D, particularly among adults
- Establish workflow protocols to accurately diagnose patients with T1D, and refer to specialists, as needed
