Seattle, Washington
Target Audience
This activity is intended for primary care, internal medicine, obstetrician-gynecologist, and pediatric physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses who have not yet provided preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or who are new to PrEP provision.
Program Overview
This foundational activity is designed for clinicians who are new to PrEP provision and aims to build core competencies for integrating HIV prevention into routine care. Learners will explore the role of primary care providers in addressing the U.S. HIV epidemic, including identifying at-risk populations and applying guidelines for HIV screening and PrEP provision. The curriculum emphasizes stigma-free sexual health conversations, a status-neutral approach to HIV prevention, and culturally responsive care. Practical guidance is provided for implementing both oral and long-acting injectable PrEP, including initiation, monitoring, and tips for using shared decision making to support patient-centered care. By the end of the activity, clinicians will be equipped with the tools needed to confidently begin prescribing PrEP and supporting patients across diverse practice settings.
Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Conduct effective sexual health assessments without stigma or judgment
- Counsel patients on PrEP regimens and dosing options based on clinical evidence, guidelines, and patient characteristics and preferences
- Implement PrEP in the primary care setting with guideline-directed strategies for treatment initiation, monitoring, and follow-up care
