Target Audience

The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of pediatric MDs, nurse practitioners (NPs), physician associates (PAs), and other family medicine clinicians who care for adolescents with obesity.

Program Overview

The rate of obesity in children and adolescents is increasing, posing significant physical and mental health challenges through childhood and adolescence and into adulthood. Recently, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have been approved for use in patients as young as 12 years, and it is critical that clinicians initiate both lifestyle management and pharmacologic therapies as early as possible. Dr. Fatima Stanford discusses 10 common questions asked about managing obesity in adolescents, including how to discuss obesity, lifestyle modification and family involvement, pharmacotherapy and recent guidelines on GLP-1 RAs and other therapies, and the possibility of bariatric surgery.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Describe the importance of managing obesity in adolescent patients
  • Discuss obesity, its effects, and treatment options with adolescents with obesity in a nonstigmatizing manner
  • Initiate pharmacologic treatment of adolescents with obesity to improve overall health and reduce the risk of comorbidities
