Target Audience

The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of primary care clinicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses.

Program Overview

Primary care providers are well positioned to test patients for HIV, receive results, and initiate treatment with rapid antiretroviral therapy (ART), which has been recommended by guidelines for several years. In this self-directed video-based activity, Dr. Jason Halperin answers common questions about HIV testing, rapid ART requirements and appropriate regimens, patient education on HIV and sexual transmission, preexposure prophylaxis, and HIV prognosis.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

• Describe key educational topics for patients newly diagnosed with HIV related to prognosis, risk of transmission, and importance of adherence to treatment
• Identify appropriate regimens and requirements for initiating rapid ART, including patient eligibility and required laboratory tests
• Educate patients about HIV, including strategies to reduce transmission and the realities of HIV as a chronic disease
