Target Audience

The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of HIV specialists (MDs, NPs, PAs, and pharmacists) involved in the treatment of patients with HIV.

Program Overview

Patients with HIV are at a higher risk of depression than the general population. This adversely affects both HIV outcomes and quality of life. These patients, like the general population, should be treated with antidepressants. In some cases, the patient’s antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen may contribute, and this should be examined on a case-by-case basis alongside the timing of depressive symptoms. Drs. Laura Waters and Glenn Treisman describe the epidemiology of depression in HIV, the link between ART regimens and depression, differentiating depression from demoralization, and selecting the most appropriate antidepressant.

Educational Objective

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Tailor clinical practice to address the needs of special or underserved patient populations
