Optimizing Care for Adolescents and Young Adults With HIV

Target Audience

The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of HIV specialists (MDs, NPs, PAs, and pharmacists) involved in the treatment of patients with HIV.

Program Overview

Whether perinatally acquired or acquired as an adult, adolescents and young adults (AYA) with HIV require special consideration. Clinicians must be aware of differences in cognitive and social development, challenges in treatment adherence, the potential for stigma among family or peers, and the effect of ART on physical development. Regularly assessing mood, development, activities, education, and strengths can help form a close relationship between the patient and clinician. Drs. Laura Waters and Caroline Foster discuss considerations for patient/clinician interactions, the utility of single-tablet regimens and keys to tailoring ART regimens, strategies to improve adherence, and the potential presence of comorbidities.
