Target Audience
This activity is intended for infectious disease and HIV specialists engaged in the care of patients with HIV.
Program Description
Individuals with HIV frequently experience weight gain related to specific antiretroviral regimens, especially second-generation integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) and tenofovir alafenamide (TAF). Antiretroviral therapy (ART)–related weight gain occurs more frequently in certain populations, namely Black women, and can increase the risk for other comorbidities, such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Dr. Laura Waters and Dr. Paul Sax review the clinical data to further characterize the association between weight gain and ART and provide helpful approaches for the management of patients with HIV and weight gain in clinical practice.
Educational Objective
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be better prepared to:
- Tailor ART regimens according to patient comorbidities, risk factors, adverse events, and drug-drug interactions
- Employ strategies to manage commonly occurring comorbidities alongside regular HIV management
