Management of People With HIV Coinfected With Hepatitis B and Hepatitis D Viruses: Module 8

Target Audience 

This activity is intended for infectious disease and HIV specialists engaged in the care of patients with HIV. 

Program Description 

Individuals with HIV frequently also have hepatitis B infection because the viruses have similar risk factors for exposure.  The presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) is necessary for the in vivo viral replication of hepatitis D virus (HDV), and these combined infections increase the risk and rapidity of cirrhosis and liver failure. Dr. Laura Waters and Dr. Jürgen Rockstroh review the elevated risks associated with concomitant hepatitis B and D infection in people with HIV, international HDV screening requirements, and management approaches that target HIV, HBV, and HDV in this complex patient population.
