Challenges in Social Determinants of Health: Module 6

Target Audience

This activity is intended for infectious disease and HIV specialists engaged in the care of patients with HIV.

Program Description

Social determinants of health (SDoH) are nonmedical factors that play a tremendous role in the likelihood that patients with HIV will be adherent to both antiretroviral therapy (ART) and appointments. Disengagement in health services can lead to negative outcomes, such as increased morbidity and mortality. Dr. Laura Waters and Dr. Fiona Burns review the SDoH highly associated with poor engagement in health services among affected people with HIV, the downstream negative effects of disengagement, and strategies for reengaging this patient population, including the use of peer navigators and colocated care.
