Transgender Patient

Target Audience

This activity is intended for HIV specialists engaged in the care of patients with HIV.

Program Description

Transgender women face a significant HIV burden, particularly Black and Latinx women. Transgender women often have lower rates of adherence and viral suppression. This community has specific concerns, needs, and considerations for both HIV treatment and gender affirming care. Dr. David Malebranche and Dr. Asa Radix discuss a patient who has concerns about interactions of antiretroviral therapy (ART) with gender-affirming hormone therapy, the feasibility of long-acting ART, stigma and other social determinants of health, and coordination with a gender care specialist.

Educational Objective

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

• Optimize ART regimens and clinical practice to address needs of specific patient populations, such as women with HIV, transgender patients, or patients with substance use disorder
