Adolescents and Young Adults Newly Diagnosed with HIV Module 2

David Malebranche, MD, MPH; David C. Griffith, MD

Jointly provided by Postgraduate Institute for Medicine and Integritas Communications.

This activity is supported by an independent educational grant from Gilead Sciences, Inc.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for HIV specialists engaged in the care of patients with HIV.

Program Description

Adolescents and young adults newly diagnosed with HIV often necessitate some different management strategies compared with adults. This can range from treatment selection to transitioning from a pediatric clinic to an adult HIV clinic. Many providers who are accustomed to treating adults are not fully prepared for caring for an adolescent patient. Dr. David Malebranche and Dr. David Griffith discuss a newly diagnosed adolescent and address common questions about discussing an HIV diagnosis, ART selection and considerations for future adverse events, educating about adherence, refilling prescriptions, mental health, and transitioning to an adult clinic.

Educational Objective

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Optimize ART regimens and clinical practice to address needs of specific patient populations, such as women with HIV, transgender patients, or patients with substance use disorder
