Target Audience

This educational initiative is intended for addiction services providers: counselors, MDs, NPs, PAs, nurses, pharmacists, case managers, peer educators, medical assistants, as well as primary care clinicians and other frontline providers.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be better able to:
  • Discuss national and local hepatitis C (HCV) epidemiology and infection risks among PWUD populations
  • Define HCV antibody positivity, HCV RNA positivity, and reflex testing
  • Provide education and counseling on curative HCV treatment and preventive harm-reduction strategies to PWUD
  • Deliver guideline-directed universal and risk-based screening, as well as a direct link to low-barrier HCV treatment in cases of HCV positivity

Program Description

The CURE AL initiative brings a focused, community-driven approach to HCV elimination in Jefferson County, Alabama, with a strategic emphasis on screening and linkage to care for people who use drugs (PWUD). This live, interactive educational session is designed specifically for substance use disorder service professionals, who play a critical role in reaching high-risk individuals. Participants will explore national and local HCV epidemiology, transmission risks among PWUD, and key diagnostic concepts, including HCV antibody positivity, HCV RNA positivity, and confirmatory testing. Additionally, the program will emphasize the practical application of guideline-directed universal and risk-based screening and counseling on curative treatment and harm-reduction strategies and establish direct, low-barrier pathways to HCV care, with the goal of ultimately strengthening local care networks and accelerating progress toward HCV elimination in Jefferson County.
