COURSE DESCRIPTION
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has no cure, and it is the 3rd leading cause of death worldwide, with the number of new cases projected to rise by more than 20% in the next 3 decades. Particularly problematic are COPD exacerbations, which are associated with rapidly worsening lung function, significantly lower quality of life (QoL) metrics, greater risk of cardiovascular events, high mortality rates, and increase use of healthcare resources. Without rapid improvements in disease prevention or the timely implementation of effective therapies, hospitalized days for patients with COPD are expected to triple. Consequently, the medical and socioeconomic burdens of COPD are significant. This BRIDGE COPD initiative will edcuate frontline PCPs from community health centers on recommended treatment paradigms to manage today's COPD patient with the overall goal of improving patient care and long-term outcomes.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Assess patients with COPD to characterize disease phenotypes, exacerbation risks, and treatable traits
- Discuss recent clinical trial evidence and guideline updates related to triple combination therapy for COPD
- Tailor maintenance regimens for patients with COPD to reflect disease severity, minimize exacerbation risks, and account for comorbidities and patient preferences
- Educate patients with COPD to improve inhaler technique, treatment adherence, vaccination rates, and shared decision making
