Exploring the Link Between Systemic Inflammation, Atherosclerosis, and CKD

Program Description

There is a high prevalence of ASCVD in patients with CKD, causing poor outcomes and increased mortality. This educational program will review the pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying systemic inflammation that contribute to the development of both ASCVD and CKD. Cardiologist Dr. Paul Ridker and nephrologist Dr. Katherine Tuttle discuss the roles of inflammatory cytokines and biomarkers indicative of high inflammation and thrombosis in assessing high-risk patients with CKD. They also highlight key points in cardiology and nephrology guidelines for assessing and treating patients with CKD who are at high risk of developing ASCVD, with a focus on reducing systemic inflammation to improve outcomes.

Target Audience

The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of cardiologists and a secondary audience of nephrologists, as well as to other healthcare providers (HCPs) involved in the care of patients at risk for developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). 

Educational Objectives 

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

1. Explain the pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying systemic inflammation in ASCVD and CKD that have led to the development of new targeted therapies

2. Incorporate biomarker testing into comprehensive assessments for patients with CKD at risk for ASCVD and CV events
