University of Miami Hemophilia Treatment Center
Miami, Florida
Target Audience
The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of hematology advanced practice providers (APPs), including nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs), as well as hematology nurses involved in the treatment of patients with hematologic disorders, especially hemophilia A.
Program Overview
Hemophilia A is a rare, X-linked bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency of factor VIII (FVIII). Although prophylactic factor replacement has long been a standard of care, frequent intravenous dosing, the risk of inhibitor development, and substantial treatment burden continue to limit outcomes and quality of life for many people with hemophilia A. Nonfactor therapies have transformed prophylaxis, and FVIIIα mimetics—including emicizumab and next-generation agents such as denecimig (Mim8) and NXT007—offer subcutaneous administration and less frequent dosing, with important differences in mechanism of action, efficacy, safety, and dosing. Yet many hematology APPs and nurses, who are central to patient counseling, shared decision-making, and long-term adherence support (particularly in rural and resource-limited settings), remain unfamiliar with these agents. This Top 10 activity delivers concise, practical answers to the most common clinical questions about FVIIIα mimetic therapy to help hematology APPs and nurses individualize treatment and improve outcomes for people living with hemophilia A.
Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Summarize the mechanisms of action of novel and emerging FVIIIα mimetic therapies for hemophilia A
- Evaluate clinical efficacy, safety, and dosing considerations associated with FVIIIα mimetic therapies for hemophilia A
- Apply knowledge of FVIIIα mimetic therapies to support individualized treatment planning and shared decision-making for people with hemophilia A
