Target Audience
The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of clinical and community pharmacists involved in the care of patients who are eligible for preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
Program Overview
Despite significant progress in HIV prevention efforts, new diagnoses continue to outpace national targets for ending the HIV epidemic. Pharmacists are essential partners in this effort and need to remain current on the latest guidelines and best practices for HIV preexposure and postexposure prophylaxis (PrEP and PEP).
This comprehensive, downloadable monograph is designed to meet the evolving needs of pharmacists as their scope of practice expands across the United States. This continuing education activity equips pharmacists with the clinical knowledge and practical tools necessary to initiate and monitor PrEP and PEP within the pharmacy setting. It also provides detailed instruction on integrating the latest clinical practice guidelines and recommendations into daily practice, including how to prescribe and monitor newer long-acting injectable (LAI) PrEP.
Accredited for 2.0 contact hours (0.20 CEUs) by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), this monograph covers all key content areas required for pharmacists seeking to become PrEP and PEP providers and to meet most state board of pharmacy training standards, including:
- HIV epidemiology and disease burden
- Pharmacology, safety, and efficacy of PrEP and PEP medications (including oral tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine [TDF/FTC], oral tenofovir alafenamide [TAF]/FTC, cabotegravir [CAB] LAI, and lenacapavir [LEN] LAI
- Assessment of sexual health and HIV risk
- Patient-centered counseling and education
- Screening for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and laboratory testing for PrEP/PEP eligibility
- Recent clinical practice guidelines and recommendations for PrEP provision
- Updated clinical practice guidelines for nonoccupational PEP (nPEP) prescribing and management
