Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants will be better able to:
-
Define current screening guidelines for HIV, HCV, and HBV, including for people at high risk
-
Identify optimal community- and clinic-specific strategies to efficiently conduct pan-viral screening for HIV, HCV, and HBV
-
Establish linkage to care pathways for patients who require follow-up for HIV, HCV, or HBV treatment or prevention
Program Description
Patients with substance use disorder (SUD), particularly people who inject drugs (PWID), are at increased risk for contracting HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV). A key measure to diagnosing people and mitigating infection spread in the population is testing, ideally pan-viral screening of all 3 infections at once, or triple screening. SUD centers can play a significant role in triple screening. Point-of-care rapid tests are available for HIV and HCV, and HBV testing can be performed in a laboratory. This on-site educational initiative at SUD centers will broaden staff understanding of the importance of triple screening, review guidelines on testing and available tests, provide guidance identifying where triple screening fits into a clinic’s workflow, and prepare staff to refer patients in need of treatment or additional prevention measures.
Agenda
-
Epidemiology and burden of HIV, HCV, and HBV in the context of SUD
-
Current screening guidelines for HIV, HCV, and HBV
-
Pan-viral testing for diagnosis
