Despite advances in the understanding of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) pathophysiology and the availability of targeted biologic therapies, rheumatologists around the world continue to face significant challenges in managing the complex, heterogeneous manifestations of this disease. In response, the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) recently released an updated guideline summary for the treatment of SLE, emphasizing strategies to minimize glucocorticoid exposure and highlighting the increasing role of biologics in achieving this goal.  In this Hot Topics activity, Dr. Maria Dall’Era offers practical, evidence-based insight into how these updated recommendations can be integrated into busy clinical practices. Through expert interpretation of the guidelines and a review of the supporting clinical data, these engaging CME activities will equip rheumatologists with actionable strategies to reduce disease flares and cumulative organ damage—critical steps toward improving long-term patient outcomes.

Target Audience

This educational activity will provide continuing medical education (CME) to clinicians who manage patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), including rheumatologists, internal medicine physicians, and specialist nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician associates (PAs).

Educational Objectives

After completing this series, the participant should be better able to:

  1. Implement new guideline recommendations on regularly monitoring patients with SLE, including evaluations of disease activity measures, organ damage, and patient-reported outcomes
  2. Describe recent guidelines on the use of biologic therapies for patients with moderate-to-severe SLE
  3. Individualize steroid-sparing treatment regimens for patients with moderate-to-severe SLE based on clinical manifestations, risks, treatment goals, and shared decision making
