Target Audience

This educational initiative is intended for addiction center clinical staff (MDs, NPs, PAs, RNs), counselors, social workers, case managers, peer educators, peer advocates, medical assistants, and non-clinical office staff.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be better able to:

  • Summarize HIV epidemiology and at-risk behaviors among PWID

  • Evaluate HIV risk and PrEP eligibility of individuals participating in SUD services

  • Counsel PWID regarding HIV prevention, including PrEP options and comprehensive harm reduction

Program Description

This empowering grassroots initiative is designed to educate and encourage clinicians and other providers working in substance use disorder (SUD) centers in metropolitan and less-populated areas to increase their clients’ awareness of and access to preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention. Small live meetings for community-based groups will offer medical and addiction-services specialists innovative methods to collaboratively engage people who inject drugs (PWID) and link them to providers for HIV testing and PrEP services. At these educational events, participants will interact directly with HIV prevention experts who will convey clinical data integrated with real-world experience and insights and provide takeaway print media and online resources for participants to use and share in the practice setting. The program will provide practical resources to connect PWID with local PrEP providers so that they can benefit from the care they need and deserve.

Agenda

  • The Critical Role for Substance Use Disorder (SUD)-Treatment Providers at the Intersection of Opioid Use Disorder and HIV Risk
  • HIV Testing 101: Guidelines, Tactics, and Tips
  • Introduction to HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
  • Effective SUD-Center–Based PrEP Screening-and-Referral Models
  • Audience Q&A
