Target Audience
The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of primary care, infectious disease, and public health and preventive medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, pharmacists, and social workers involved in the treatment of patients with HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV), specifically those experiencing homelessness.
Program Overview
People experiencing homelessness (PEH) may have undiagnosed HIV or may have multiple risk factors for HIV. Discussing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with these patients is critical to preventing HIV transmission, as is testing patients for HIV. If a patient tests positive, an antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen should be initiated immediately in all populations, including PEH. This population, however, does face challenges in ART initiation and long-term management. In this 1-hour webinar, Dr. Arsalan Shah and Dr. Sarah Rowan will discuss strategies to test PEH for HIV, the rationale and optimal tactics to initiate either PrEP or ART in PEH, and clinic models for preventing or treating HIV in PEH.
Educational Objective
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Describe adaptations of rapid-ART and PrEP protocols that address the competing needs and circumstances of PEH
- Identify community-based opportunities and logistics for colocation of HIV and HCV healthcare services with SUD and housing programs
- Evaluate models for retention of PEH in comprehensive HIV and HCV care, monitoring, and support
